China Skies Turn Blood Red: Know What Caused Rare Phenomenon that Spooked Locals

People in the city of Zhoushan in China witnessed the mysterious blood red sky during the weekend that led to panic among residents. The video shows the sky above the port city with a dark red color along with a thick fog layer. The report shows the sky is the red to the port area. The Global Times reports that people record the sky to dark red, from home, balcony, and their streets. Videos and photos of phenomena become viral with more than 150 million views on the Chinese Social Media Sina and Weibo platforms. Many users call this phenomenon a bad sign of handling the Chinese government of Covid-19 in this country.

“I have never seen anything like this before. I am truly surprising that the sky can even turn red,” said a user, as reported by the Global Times.When the video becomes viral and widespread panic hit people in the city, television and media outlets explain that the blood red sky is the result of refraction of natural light and not a man-made effect. According to the report, the Meteorological Bureau Zhoushan explained, “When the weather conditions are good, more water in the atmosphere forms aerosols that refract and spread the light of fishing boats and create the red sky seen by the public.”

The local media of the city reported that the red sky might be caused by refraction of red lights originating from fishing vessels that harvest saury pacific.
While people compare the event with the 1770 incident where the sky changed red for nine days due to large solar activity as claimed by Japanese scientists in the 2017 research article, an expert from the Space Physics Research Team at China University of Geosciences in Wuhan Media that there is no anomaly in the observed solar activity and the two events are independent.
